A Final Farewell: How Linkin Park Honored Their Late Frontman at the Hollywood Bowl
In short: Following the tragic death of Chester Bennington in 2017, Linkin Park organized a massive tribute concert at the Hollywood Bowl. This emotional gathering served as the band's only live performance for years, bringing together an array of musicians to celebrate their frontman's legacy before a sold-out crowd and millions online.
On July 20, 2017, the music world lost Chester Bennington, the lead vocalist of Linkin Park. His passing led to the immediate cancellation of the band's One More Light World Tour. By August, the group announced their intention to host a memorial event in Los Angeles. The chosen venue was the iconic Hollywood Bowl, and by late September, the band confirmed that every ticket had been sold.
The concert, held on October 27, 2017, featured a diverse lineup of artists, including members of Blink-182, Korn, System of a Down, and Avenged Sevenfold. The setlist spanned the band's career, featuring both classic hits and newer material. One notable moment involved the song Castle of Glass; originally planned with Gwen Stefani, the performance shifted when she withdrew two days prior. Alanis Morissette stepped in to fill the role, later admitting she felt significant nerves while relying on a teleprompter to navigate the song.
This event marked the final time drummer Rob Bourdon performed with the band, as he did not return following the group's subsequent hiatus. The concert was also broadcast via livestream on the band's official YouTube channel. The impact of the tribute has proven enduring, with the footage accumulating over 26 million views as of July 2025. It remains a significant moment in the band's history, bridging the gap between their original formation and their eventual return to the stage in 2024.
