The Llanos: A vast, seasonal wilderness shaped by ancient climate shifts and water
In short: Stretching across Venezuela and Colombia, the Llanos is a massive tropical grassland defined by extreme seasonal cycles. These plains, spanning over 200,000 square miles, transform from parched, nutrient-poor soils into temporary wetlands. This unique landscape serves as a living record of how global cooling shaped the world's savannas millions of years ago.
The Llanos, or 'The Plains,' occupy a vast lowland region bounded by the Andes and the Guiana Highlands. This ecoregion is a classic example of a tropical savanna, characterized by an open canopy of scattered trees over a continuous layer of grasses. The environment is dictated by a strict seasonal rhythm: a rainy period from April to November, which can flood the landscape by up to a meter, followed by a dry season from December to March. This cycle creates two distinct habitats: the llano alto, which remains dry year-round, and the llano bajo, which becomes a temporary wetland.
The origins of these grasslands are tied to a global cooling trend that began during the Cenozoic Era. As temperatures dropped over the last 25 million years, reduced evaporation slowed the hydrologic cycle, leading to less precipitation and the expansion of dry-adapted vegetation. Fossil evidence from South America suggests that grass-rich savanna ecosystems were already well-established by the early Miocene, roughly 20 million years ago. During the subsequent Pleistocene ice ages, these savannas expanded further, replacing forests as the climate became increasingly arid.
Today, the Llanos supports a diverse array of life, from giant anteaters and capybaras to specialized flora like the Trachypogon grasses and moriche palms. While the region remains a vital ecological zone, it is not untouched. Human activity, which has influenced savanna development for millennia, is currently driving a new phase of change. With roughly 28% of the ecoregion now within protected areas, the Llanos remains a critical site for understanding how ancient climatic shifts and modern human pressures continue to reshape the world's tropical grasslands.
