Lorestan: The mountainous Iranian province where ancient bronze-making and tribal defiance collide
In short: Nestled in the rugged Zagros Mountains, Lorestan is a land defined by its deep history and fierce independence. From the ancient Kassites who once ruled Babylonia to nomadic tribes that resisted state modernization, this province remains a complex mosaic of Luri and Kurdish cultures, shaped by geography and centuries of conflict.
Lorestan, meaning the land of the Lurs, is a province in western Iran characterized by the dramatic terrain of the Zagros Mountains. Its history stretches back to the 3rd millennium BC, when migrant tribes settled its valleys. Among these were the Kassites, who eventually seized control of Babylonia from approximately 1531 BC until 1155 BC. The region is world-renowned for its bronze artifacts, a tradition that began in the mid-3rd millennium BC and flourished between 1000 and 650 BC, producing vigorous, animal-focused designs found in museums globally.
The province's political history is marked by a long struggle for autonomy. During the Qajar dynasty, a policy of divide and rule weakened settled communities, leading to an increase in pastoral nomadism as tribes took control of land. By the 1920s, Reza Shah’s Pahlavi government sought to modernize the region by force, viewing nomadic life as an obstacle to progress. This triggered intense conflict, including the 1924 siege of Khorramabad, where tribal alliances briefly drove the state army into fortresses. The eventual subjugation of Lorestan was only achieved through the Shah's strategic alliances with specific local tribes.
Today, Lorestan remains ethnically and linguistically diverse. While the Northern Luri language dominates, the northern counties are heavily populated by the Lak Kurds. The province’s geography—ranging from 4,050-meter peaks like Oshtorankuh to warmer southern foothills—creates distinct climatic zones. Despite the modernization efforts of the last century, the region retains a strong sense of its historical identity, rooted in its unique metallurgical heritage and the enduring legacy of its tribal structures.
