In short: While many see the Los Lagos Region as a scenic corner of Patagonia, it is a global economic powerhouse. From massive salmon exports to the nation's largest cattle stock, this landscape of temperate rainforests and fjords drives much of Chile's international trade.

The region's economic identity is deeply tied to its waters. It stands as Chile's primary hub for aquaculture, harvesting approximately 958,507 tonnes of resources in 2024, which accounts for 65.4% of the country's total. Salmon and trout farming is the cornerstone of this industry; in 2019, these exports were valued at over $5.1 billion, making them the country's leading non-mineral export. The region also dominates the mussel market, with 2023 sales reaching $2/289.5 million, and holds a near-monopoly on national seaweed cultivation, specifically Pelillo.

The terrestrial landscape is equally productive. The region is a vital agricultural center, housing 39% of Chile's cattle stock—over 1.2 million head as of 2019. It also leads the nation in potato production, contributing 31% of the national harvest during the 2022/2023 period. This agricultural strength is complemented by a robust dairy industry, particularly around Osorno, where major processing plants like Nestlé and Watt's contribute to a significant portion of the country's milk production.

Historically, the area known as Futahuillimapu—the 'great land of the south'—has been home to the Huilliche people long before Spanish settlement began in the Chiloé Archipelago in 1567. The region's complex history includes 19th-century German colonization and significant administrative shifts, such as the 1974 creation of the 'X Region' and the 2007 separation of the Los Ríos province. Today, it remains a premier destination for nature-based tourism, boasting the highest number of visits to protected wilderness areas in Chile.
