In short: Long before they were known as the Aztec Empire, the Mexica were late arrivals to the Valley of Mexico. Searching for a divine sign, they built a grand island metropolis that eventually dominated the region, only to face near-total erasure following the Spanish conquest and subsequent waves of colonial suppression.

The Mexica were the final group of Nahua-speaking nomads to enter the Valley of Mexico around 1200 CE. According to legend, they sought a specific omen from their god Huitzilopochtli: an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus. Upon discovering this sign on an island in Lake Texcoco, they established Tenochtitlan in 1325, though some researchers suggest the date was 1345. This city-state eventually anchored the Triple Alliance, a political powerhouse that exerted dominance over the surrounding landscape.

The empire was not a monolith. The Mexica shared the region with groups like the Tlatelolca, who founded their own city, Tlatelolco, in 1337. The term 'Aztec'—coined by Alexander von Humboldt—is often used broadly today, but it historically refers to a complex web of Nahuatl-speaking peoples. The Mexica themselves were also known as the Tenochca, named after their capital and its founding leader, Tenoch. Their society was deeply defined by a cosmology that linked warfare and sacrifice to the preservation of the sun and cosmic order, centered at the Templo Mayor.

The fall of the empire in 1521 brought catastrophic change. Under Spanish rule, the Mexica faced forced conversion, the destruction of their religious icons, and severe population decline, which dropped by as much as 90% by 1600 due to overwork and epidemics. Despite the suppression of their culture and language, the Mexica did not vanish. Today, their legacy persists through the Nahua people and the millions of Nahuatl speakers in Mexico. While the 21st-century government classifies ethnicity by language rather than ancestry, the cultural identity remains a vital, evolving thread in the history of the Americas.
