Montego Bay: From a Spanish Lard Port to the Caribbean's Busiest Tourist Hub
In short: Known as the Second City of Jamaica, Montego Bay has evolved from a colonial sugarcane port into a premier global travel destination. Beyond its white sand beaches and luxury resorts, the city holds a complex history of rebellion, economic transformation, and a pivotal role in the modern Caribbean tourism industry.
Montego Bay, the capital of St. James parish, was named by Christopher Columbus as Golfo de Buen Tiempo. The name Montego is believed to be a corruption of the Spanish word manteca, or lard, reflecting its history as a port for exporting animal products during Spanish rule. Following the British conquest in 1655, the region became a massive producer of sugarcane, relying on enslaved labor until the mid-19th century. The area was the site of the 1831 Baptist War, a major slave revolt led by Samuel Sharpe, who was executed in 1832 and later honored as a national hero.
The city's economy shifted significantly after the 1834 emancipation process, moving toward coffee and banana exports as the sugar industry declined. Today, Montego Bay serves as the primary engine of Jamaica's tourism sector. It is home to the Sangster International Airport, the busiest in the English-speaking Caribbean, which handled 4.3 million passengers in 2017. The city also hosts the headquarters of the resort chain Sandals and features a modern convention center opened in 2011. Despite its growth, the city remains an integral part of St. James parish, lacking formal administrative autonomy.
Modern Montego Bay is a melting pot of cultures, with a population primarily of African descent alongside significant East Indian and Chinese communities who arrived as indentured servants in the 19th century. The city's infrastructure is currently undergoing modernization, including plans for a US$200 million tolled bypass to alleviate traffic congestion. While the city is a hub for luxury travel and business process outsourcing, it also faces environmental challenges, such as the impact of hurricanes like the 2025 Hurricane Melissa. Its geography, defined by steep limestone hills and coral reefs, continues to shape its development as a top-tier regional destination.
