In short: Founded in 1777, Montería has a history of shifting banks. After a native group burned the settlement in 1803, the residents abandoned their new location to return to the original east side of the Sinú River, where the 'Pearl of the Sinú' thrives today.

The history of Montería is defined by its relationship with the Sinú River. Originally settled by the Zenú Indigenous peoples—who inhabited the banks of the Sinú, San Jorge, and Nechí rivers—the area was later transformed by Spanish colonial influence. In 1777, Spanish officer Antonio de la Torre y Miranda, acting under the authority of Governor Juan de Torrezar Díaz Pimienta, officially founded the city. While he initially renamed the settlement 'San Jerónimo de Buenavista' to honor Saint Jerome, the inhabitants continued to use the name Montería.

The city's geography has been as fluid as the river itself. Following the 1803 burning of the city by a group of natives, the population migrated from the west bank back to the east bank of the Sinु River. While the city has seen recent growth on the western side, its identity remains tied to the river's edge. Today, the city serves as the capital of the Department of Córdoba, having separated from the Department of Bolívar in 1952.

Beyond its colonial roots, Montería is a cultural and economic powerhouse in northern Colombia. Known as the 'Cattle Farming Capital,' its economy is driven by ranching and a prosperous commercial district. The city is also a musical hub, hosting global stars like Shakira and Juanes, and is the birthplace of singer-songwriter Manuel Turizo. Even the river provides for the city's infrastructure; divers collect high-quality sand from the riverbed to produce cinder blocks for local construction.
