The artist who traded her name to survive a cancer diagnosis
In short: In 2009, after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer, Chilean singer Monserrat Bustamante abandoned her identity to become Mon Laferte. This wasn't just a rebranding; it was a literal rebirth following a life-threatening illness that halted her career and forced her to start from zero.
Born in Viña del Mar, Chile, Norma Monserrat Bustamante Laferte began her musical journey as a child prodigy. After winning a school contest at age nine, she received a guitar and started composing original music. Despite receiving a scholarship to study at a conservatory at thirteen, she chose a self-taught path, honing her craft by performing in local bars in Viña del Mar and Valparaiso.
Her career took a dramatic turn in 2003 when she entered the Chilean reality competition 'Rojo.' While the show brought early success with her album 'La Chica de Rojo,' her move to Mexico City in 2007 marked a pivotal transition. It was during this period, while recording new material, that she faced a thyroid cancer diagnosis. The treatment—specifically radiation—had long-term effects, eventually requiring fertility treatments in California to conceive her son.
The name 'Mon Laferte' emerged as a symbol of this new beginning. Since then, she has become the best-selling Chilean artist of the digital era, moving with versatility across genres like bolero, cumbia, and salsa. Her work is characterized by high production values; for example, her 2018 album 'Norma' was recorded in a single session at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles with 13 musicians playing simultaneously to capture a live feel.
Beyond music, Laferte has established herself as a visual artist and activist. She debuted a solo exhibit of 76 pieces in 2020 and has used her platform for political protest, notably during the 2019 Chilean protests. Now a Mexican citizen as of November 2022, she continues to blend her dual identities through diverse collaborations and advocacy.
