A masterpiece of Islamic architecture now serves as a Roman Catholic cathedral in Spain.
In short: The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is a unique architectural hybrid, evolving from a Great Mosque founded in 785 into a Christian cathedral. Its history is marked by centuries of expansion, Byzantine-influenced artistry, and complex debates regarding its origins, reflecting the shifting cultural and political identities of the Iberian Peninsula.
The Great Mosque of Córdoba was established in 785 by Abd al-Rahman I, a survivor of the Umayyad dynasty who fled to the Iberian Peninsula after the Abbasid Revolution. The structure was built on a site that tradition claims once housed a Visigothic church, though modern archaeological evidence remains contested. Some scholars argue for the existence of an episcopal complex, while others find no definitive proof of earlier Christian structures. Regardless of the site's prior use, the mosque was constructed using recycled Roman and Visigothic materials, featuring a distinctive hypostyle hall with two-tiered arches.
Over the following centuries, the mosque underwent significant expansions. Abd al-Rahman II extended the prayer hall in the 9th century, while Abd al-Rahman III added a minaret in 958 and enlarged the courtyard. Under al-Hakam II, the mosque gained its most famous features, including a richly decorated mihrab and ribbed domes adorned with gold mosaics crafted by artisans sent from Constantinople. By the time Al-Mansur expanded the structure laterally in the late 10th century, it had become the most expansive mosque in the Islamic world outside of the Abbasid territories in Iraq.
Following the Christian conquest of Córdoba in 1236, the building was converted into a cathedral. While it underwent only minor modifications for centuries, a major 16th-century project inserted a Renaissance nave and transept into the center of the structure. Today, the building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as the cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Córdoba. It remains a focal point for studies on architectural history and the complex interplay of cultural legacies in Spain.
