A Spanish landmark built over a mosque, defining the unique Mudejar-Gothic architectural style.
In short: In the heart of Calatayud, Spain, stands a church that serves as a physical timeline of history. Commissioned in the 12th century atop the site of a former mosque, this structure blends Gothic and Mudejar influences, housing centuries of royal decrees and political allegiance within its thick, brick-walled tower.
The Colegiata de Santa Maria la Mayor emerged following the 12th-century Reconquista of Calatayud, ordered by King Alfonso I el Batallador. Its construction replaced the town's primary mosque, marking a significant cultural transition. Today, the site remains a testament to the Mudejar-Gothic style, preserving its original cloister, apse, and a towering structure that dominates the local skyline.
The church served as more than a place of worship; it was a center of political gravity. It hosted legislative assemblies during the rule of King Pedro IV of Aragon and witnessed the town pledging loyalty to both Emperor Charles I and King Philip III of Spain. Recognizing its cultural importance, the site received the status of Bien de Interés Cultural and Monumento Nacional in 1884, eventually gaining UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2001 as part of the broader Mudejar Architecture of Aragon.
Architecturally, the church is defined by its 70-meter octagonal brick tower, which took centuries to complete. The design features walls 1.5 meters thick at the base, with a clever stairwell spiraling between inner and outer shells. Decorative elements become more intricate as the tower ascends, culminating in a spire added between the mid- and late 18th century. Further artistic refinement occurred in the 16th century, when sculptors Juan de Talavera and Esteban de Obray crafted the alabaster portal, which was later protected by an iron gate in 1884.
