A diplomatic exception for sports in Japan
In short: North Korea is set to compete in the 2026 Asian Games hosted by Japan. Despite a general ban on North Korean citizens entering the country, the Japanese government plans to waive this restriction specifically for the sporting event, allowing a significant delegation to cross the border.
The upcoming 2026 Asian Games will take place in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya from September 19 to October 4. While Japan maintains a principle of banning North Korean citizens from entry, the government has established a precedent for sporting exceptions. This waiver is expected to remain in place for the 2026 event, facilitating a rare instance of cross-border participation between the two nations.
The scale of the North Korean presence will be notably smaller than in previous years. During the 2022 Asian Games (held in September 2023), the country sent 185 athletes across 18 different sports. For the 2026 games, estimates suggest a reduction to around 100 athletes competing in 14 sports. However, when including officials, the total delegation size is expected to reach approximately 180 people. This represents a significant contraction in athletic representation compared to the previous cycle. The reduction highlights a shift in how the nation allocates its sporting resources for international competition.
Specific sporting interests are already defined for the trip. The North Korean squad will include nine wrestlers and will field both a men's under-23 and a women's senior national team for the football tournaments. The final squad was officially announced on September 5, marking the transition from planning to active participation in one of Asia's largest multi-sport events. The official roster of participants was finalized on September 5. These athletes will represent their country during the two-week period of competition ending October 4.
