In short: Located in the western reaches of North Korea, North Pyongan Province serves as a critical border region defined by the Yalu River. Beyond its standard provincial structure, the area hosts a distinct administrative experiment that highlights the complexities of governance in the region. Discover the history and geography of this territory.

North Pyongan Province emerged in 1896, carved from the northern portion of the historical P'yŏng'an Province. It remained a unified provincial entity throughout the period of Japanese rule until 1945, at which point it transitioned into its current status as a province within North Korea. Geographically, the province is defined by its borders: the Yalu River marks its northern boundary with China's Liaoning province, while it shares eastern and southern borders with Chagang Province and South Pyong'an Province, respectively. To the west, the province meets the waters of the Korea Bay and the Yellow Sea.

The administrative landscape of the province is notably complex. It is currently organized into 3 cities, known as si, and 22 counties, known as kun. However, the capital city of Sinuiju sits at the center of a unique political development. In 2002, the Sinuiju Special Administrative Region was established in the western corner of the province. This entity was designed to function under a separate governance structure, effectively detaching it from the standard administrative control of North Pyongan Province itself.

This regional division reflects the strategic importance of the area, particularly its proximity to China. The presence of institutions like the North Pyongan Province Art Theatre, located in Sinuiju, underscores the city's role as a cultural and administrative hub. While the province maintains its traditional structure of cities and counties, the existence of the Special Administrative Region represents a deliberate departure from the standard provincial model, creating a dual-layered governance system that remains a defining feature of the region's modern identity.
