How a regional hub overtook the state capital in passenger volume
In short: In early summer 2025, Northwest Arkansas National Airport achieved a major milestone, surpassing Little Rock's Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport as the busiest in the state. Driven by corporate giants and a growing population, this facility has transformed from a single-runway outpost into a vital economic engine.
The evolution of Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA) is a story of rapid regional expansion. Originally opened on November 1, 1998, as the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, the facility was established to address the operational limitations of Fayetteville's Drake Field. The project was a collaborative effort led by the Northwest Arkansas Council, with Alice L. Walton serving as its first chairperson. By December 201 and to better attract airline service, the facility adopted its current 'National' designation. The airport's governance structure was shaped by a regional authority that brought together leaders from several surrounding cities and counties. This group included representatives from Rogers, Siloam Springs, and Springdale, as well as Benton and Washington counties.
The airport's growth is inextricably linked to the economic power of its neighbors. Global corporate giants, such as Bentonville's Walmart, Springdale's Tyson Foods, and Lowell's J.B. Hunt Transport Services, rely heavily on XNA's nearby location. This corporate density, alongside the travel needs of University of Arkansas athletic teams, helped drive a 10% increase in passenger volume in 2025, reaching a record 2,524,256 passengers. This surge in travelers contributed to a historic milestone in 2025, when the airport's passenger numbers reached a record 2,524,256. This growth represents a 10% rise compared to the previous year's figures.
Infrastructure improvements have been constant. While the airport began with a single runway, it now features two parallel 8,800-foot runways. Significant investments include a $21 million expansion in 2010 and a Terminal Modernization Project completed in 2026. Even the air traffic control tower is being replaced; the original 57-foot structure, intended as a temporary solution in 1998, is being superseded by a 141-foot tower to handle increasing traffic volumes. Beyond the terminal, a new four-lane access road is currently under construction to connect the facility to Highway 612. This project, managed by the Arkansas Department of Transportation, is expected to be finished by late August 2026.
