How a dirt road became America's second-busiest single-runway airport
In short: In 1980, Lee County chose a site for a new regional airport that was nothing more than a dirt road. Today, Southwest Florida International Airport is a logistical powerhouse, handling over 11 million passengers annually and serving as a primary gateway for international travel to the Gulf Coast.
The transition from Page Field to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) was born of geographical necessity. The U.S. border limited Page Field's growth during the 1970s. Expansion became unfeasible due to a railway eastwards and route 41 westward. The county instead selected a 13,555-acre site southeast of Fort Myers. This location offered a strategic advantage: proximity to Interstate 75, which opened through Fort Myers in 1979, providing the high-volume road access required for a major hub.
The airport's growth has been defined by rapid scaling and infrastructure pivots. Opening in 1983 as Southwest Florida Regional Airport, it quickly exceeded its initial 3 million annual passenger capacity by 1988. To meet demand, the airport underwent significant transformations, including a $438 million midfield terminal opening in 2005 and a 1993 renaming to 'International' status. This coincided with lengthening the runway to 12,000 feet—making it the fourth-longest in Florida—to accommodate global flights.
Today, the airport is undergoing a multiphase expansion estimated at $1.1 billion. This project aims to consolidate three separate security checkpoints into one and add Concourse E by 2027, which will house 14 additional gates. While it currently operates with a single runway (runway 06/24), studies for a second parallel runway are already underway to sustain its trajectory as a premier U.S. aviation gateway.
Beyond logistics, the airport serves as a cultural and economic bridge. In 1994, it launched Fort Myers' first flight to Europe specifically to target the German-American community in Southwest Florida. This intentional cultivation of international markets helped establish the region as a global tourism destination.
