How a forest of Okaan trees became a modern agricultural hub in Pakistan
In short: Named after a native tree species, Okara evolved from a colonial-era forest into a bustling agricultural center. Today, it stands as the 20th most populous city in Pakistan, defined by its massive livestock industry, historic dairy farms, and a unique linguistic landscape dominated by Punjabi speakers.
The city of Okara, located in the Punjab province, derives its name from the Okaan tree, which once blanketed the region. During the era of British rule, the area was part of the Montgomery District and featured a significant saltpeter refinery. The city's modern identity began to take shape with the arrival of the railway in 1892, which helped transform the forested landscape into a hub for agriculture and textile production. Following the independence of Pakistan in 1947, the region saw a significant influx of Muslim refugees who had supported the Pakistan Movement.
Okara is perhaps best known today for its livestock production, particularly the Sahiwal cattle breed and the Niliravi water buffalo. The region hosts the Livestock Production Research Institute at the Bahadar Nagar Farm, a sprawling government facility dedicated to the management of cows, buffalo, bulls, goats, and sheep. Additionally, the city is home to historic military dairy farms, established before 1947, which remain famous for their cheese production. These agricultural foundations are supported by a climate that experiences extreme seasonal shifts, ranging from winter lows of 3 °C to summer highs of 45 °C.
Administratively, the city serves as the capital of the Okara District, which was officially established in 1982. It is subdivided into ten Union councils and maintains a diverse demographic profile. According to the 2023 census, the vast majority of the population speaks Punjabi, with 86.3% of residents using the language, while 12.8% speak Urdu. The remaining population speaks Pashto or other minor languages like Sindhi and Balochi. This cultural and economic blend continues to define the city as it balances its historical roots with its status as a major regional center southwest of Lahore.
