In short: Spanning the border between Germany and the Czech Republic, the Ore Mountain Mining Region stands as a testament to 800 years of technological evolution. From silver to uranium, this landscape was fundamentally reshaped by centuries of intensive industrial activity, leaving behind a dense collection of historic monuments and infrastructure.

The Ore Mountain Mining Region, known officially as the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region, represents a profound intersection of human industry and geography. Stretching approximately 95 kilometres in length and 45 kilometres in width, the area has been defined by an uninterrupted history of extraction that began with the discovery of silver in 1168. This long-term industrial presence influenced every facet of the local environment, dictating the development of water management systems, transportation networks, and urban planning across the region.

In July 2019, UNESCO recognized the area as a World Heritage Site, citing its exceptional role in the advancement of mining technology. The site encompasses 22 distinct locations, with 17 situated within Germany and 5 located in the Czech Republic. These sites preserve a wide array of industrial relics, including original mine shafts, smelters, and hammer mills that document the shifting priorities of the mining industry over eight centuries.

The region’s economic output evolved significantly over time. While silver mining dominated from the 14th to the 16th centuries, the focus eventually shifted toward cobalt, for which the region became a global leader until the mid-1700s. By the 19th and 20th centuries, the extraction of anthracite and uranium became the primary drivers of economic growth in Saxony. Today, the legacy of this industrial activity continues to evolve, as researchers investigate the potential for mining modern resources like lithium, tungsten, and indium within the same historic landscape.
