In short: Parañaque is a vital urban hub in Metro Manila, yet its origins remain shrouded in competing myths. Whether named for a banyan tree, a linguistic compromise between farmers and fishermen, or a misunderstood Spanish command, the city’s identity is as layered as its complex history of colonial trade and strategic defense.

Officially founded in 1580 by the Order of Saint Augustine, Parañaque has long served as a strategic crossroads between Manila, Cavite, and Batangas. Its early history was defined by its proximity to the sea, facilitating trade with Chinese, Japanese, and Indian merchants. By the late 16th century, Spanish records identified the settlement as Palañac, a precursor to its modern name. Throughout the colonial era, the town played a pivotal role in defense, notably helping to repel the Chinese pirate Limahong in 1574 and maintaining loyalty to Spanish authorities during the 1762 British invasion.

The city's evolution into a modern metropolis has been marked by shifting administrative boundaries. Once part of the province of Rizal, it was incorporated into the National Capital Region in 1975 and officially chartered as a city in 1998. Today, it is a dense urban center of 703,245 people, home to the sprawling Entertainment City gaming complex and the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange, the country's first landport. Its economic landscape is a blend of traditional flea markets like Baclaran and modern, large-scale developments.

Despite its growth, Parañaque remains defined by its unique cultural and territorial character. It is divided into 16 barangays and two distinct districts, while navigating unresolved territorial disputes with neighboring Muntinlupa. The city is also a religious melting pot, hosting the oldest church in the diocese, the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew, alongside the first Greek Orthodox cathedral in Southeast Asia. Whether through its historical resilience or its current status as a commercial gateway, Parañaque continues to occupy a central position in the Philippines' ongoing political and economic progress.
