In short: Perry, Florida, serves as the county seat of Taylor County, holding a population of nearly 7,000 residents. While the city is known for its humid subtropical climate and local athletic achievements, it has also endured significant challenges, ranging from historical civil unrest to the destructive force of recent major hurricanes.

Named for Madison Perry, a Confederate colonel and Florida's fourth governor, the city has evolved significantly since its early 20th-century origins. In 1922, the town was a small community of fewer than 2,000 people. That year, it became the site of the Perry Massacre, a period of intense racial violence in December that saw the lynching of three Black men and the destruction of several community institutions, including a school, a church, and a Masonic lodge.

The city's geography and infrastructure have faced repeated tests. Located about 50 miles southeast of Tallahassee, Perry covers 9.3 square miles of land. In August 1998, the community experienced a major industrial accident when an explosion at a natural gas plant injured four firefighters and forced the evacuation of 100 nearby homes. More recently, the region has been hit by severe weather; Hurricane Idalia struck in August 2023, followed just over a year later in September 2024 by Hurricane Helene, which made landfall nearby as a Category 4 storm, causing widespread damage and power outages.

Despite these trials, Perry maintains a distinct identity supported by local services like the Perry–Foley Airport and Big Bend Transit. Demographically, the city has seen shifts over the decades, with the 2020 census recording 6,898 residents. The community continues to be served by the Taylor County School District, and its local culture is often tied to the history of the Taylor County High School Bulldogs, who secured a state football championship in the 1997–1998 season.
