In short: Founded in 2018, PFC Sochi emerged as the city's sole professional football team following the relocation of Dynamo Saint Petersburg. Despite a brief history, the club has experienced dramatic swings between top-tier competition and relegation, all while playing in a massive stadium built for the Olympic Games.

PFC Sochi was established on 4 July 2018, filling a void as the only professional football organization in the city. The club immediately set its sights on the upper echelons of Russian football, securing promotion to the Russian Premier League by the end of the 2018–19 season. Their home matches are hosted at the Fisht Olympic Stadium, a venue originally constructed for the 2014 Winter Olympics, which offers a capacity of 40,000 seats.

The club's trajectory has been marked by rapid volatility. After a debut season that saw them finish in twelfth place, the team climbed to 5th in 2020–21, earning their first qualification for European competition in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Their most successful domestic campaign followed in 2021–22, when they secured 2nd place in the Russian Premier League after a decisive 5–1 victory against Dynamo Moscow on the final matchday. This era also saw a bizarre statistical anomaly on 19 June 2020, when Sochi defeated FC Rostov 10–1, a result heavily influenced by the absence of 42 Rostov players due to COVID-19 protocols.

Stability has proven elusive, however. Following five seasons in the top tier, the club suffered relegation in May 2024. Their path back to the Premier League was unconventional; after finishing 5th in the First League for the 2024–25 season, they were granted a spot in the promotion play-offs because a higher-ranked rival failed to secure the necessary licensing. Sochi capitalized on this opportunity, winning the play-offs to return to the top flight, only to be relegated once more by 10 May 2026. This cycle of promotion and relegation highlights the intense competitive pressures within the Russian football pyramid, where financial and licensing requirements can be as decisive as performance on the pitch.
