Mumbai's Green Line Metro: A Massive Infrastructure Project Spanning 60 Kilometers of Elevated Rail
In short: The Green Line is a sprawling Mumbai Metro project designed to decongest roads and relieve pressure on the city's suburban railway. Comprising three integrated lines, this fully elevated network connects Mira Bhayandar to Wadala, utilizing advanced drone surveying and massive new depots to manage its complex, multi-year construction timeline.
The Green Line is a major component of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) master plan, which aims to modernize urban transit across more than 300 kilometers of new rail. The project is composed of three distinct segments: Line 4, Line 4A, and Line 10. Together, these lines create a continuous corridor stretching 60.409 kilometers. While the main line is entirely elevated, the project faces significant engineering challenges, including navigating sensitive environmental zones like the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and coastal areas where construction is strictly regulated.
Construction has been a multi-year endeavor, with work on Line 4 beginning in October 2018 and Line 4A following in September 2019. To manage the scale of the project, the MMRDA has implemented innovative solutions, such as using drones equipped with 360-degree cameras for high-accuracy surveying. The logistics are supported by a massive 174-hectare depot at Mogharpada, which serves not only the Green Line but also the proposed Line 11. This facility is designed for high capacity, featuring 64 stabling lines and specialized maintenance infrastructure to support the fleet of 39 six-coach trains.
The project has undergone significant evolution since its inception in 2015. Originally, Line 11 was conceived as a natural extension to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, but it was later reworked into a spur line under the management of the MMRCL, with its budget estimates doubling to ₹16,000 crore. Financing for the core Green Line segments is supported by a €545 million loan from the German development bank KfW. Despite legal challenges regarding alignment and environmental clearances, the project continues to advance, with recent contracts awarded for critical signaling systems and rolling stock to ensure the network can eventually support efficient, high-frequency passenger service across Mumbai's northern regions.
