The sitcom that tried to make superheroes feel like office workers
In short: Imagine a world where being a superhero is common, but your job is just making sure regular people don't get crushed by the collateral damage. This DC Universe spin-off traded capes for cubicles, focusing on the corporate safety of Charm City rather than the battles themselves.
Powerless is an American sitcom set within the DC Universe that premiered on NBC in early 2017. Unlike many adaptations, it does not follow comic book storylines directly; instead, it imagines stories running parallel to them. Wayne Security, which belongs to Wayne Enterprises, features Emily Locke as its Director of Research & Development. Her primary mission is developing products to help ordinary humans survive the chaos caused by superheroes and supervillains.
The series leans heavily into office comedy tropes, featuring characters like Teddy Knight, who creates pranks to make their workplace feel less 'un-super,' and Jackie Swift, a speedster serving as Locke's personal assistant. The production faced significant hurdles early on: after the initial pilot showed positive reviews at Comic Con 2016, creator Ben Queen departed. This led to a massive overhaul where nearly the entire episode was rewritten and reshot with a new premise.
Despite critical praise for its 'light, nimble humor' and beautiful opening credits featuring classic artists like Carmine Infantino, the show struggled with consistency. While early reviews were mixed or even negative—with some critics calling the script 'lousy'—the series reportedly improved by the third episode. However, NBC ultimately pulled the final three episodes from its schedule in April 2017, leaving the series' conclusion a mystery to many viewers.
The show also featured notable cameos and connections to DC lore, including Adam West as Chairman West and Marc McClure as Emily Locke’s father. It even included a fictionalized version of Ron Funches, who serves King Arthur Curry (Aquaman) in Atlantis.
