From church pews to Ground Force One: the evolution of a Canadian bus icon
In short: Founded by a cabinet maker in 1924, Prevost transformed from a small workshop building single bus bodies into a premier manufacturer of high-end motorcoaches. Today, its vehicles serve as the foundation for luxury motorhomes and even the heavily armored transport used by the United States Secret Service.
Eugène Prévost, a cabinet maker who originally specialized in church pews and school furniture, founded the company in 1924. Initially, his production was remarkably modest, limited to just one custom bus body per winter. By the late 1930s, the company established its first dedicated manufacturing plant in Sainte-Claire, Quebec, and by 1949, annual production had climbed to over 100 vehicles. This growth established the firm as the largest Canadian builder of intercity coaches at the time, though the company faced significant volatility, with production crashing to just three buses in 1956.
The company underwent a major transition in 1957 when Paul Normand acquired the business. Under the leadership of the Normand family, which lasted until 1995, Prevost modernized its offerings significantly. They introduced advanced features like stainless steel side panels, pneumatic suspension, and diesel engines. The company also shifted its focus toward the motorcoach market, eventually ending its transit bus production in 1968. In 1995, the company was sold to a partnership involving the Volvo Bus Corporation and the Henlys Group, with Volvo eventually assuming sole ownership in 2004.
Prevost's engineering legacy is perhaps best exemplified by the H-Series and the X3-45 platform. The H5-60, an articulated bus introduced in 1985, marked a significant expansion in their capabilities. More recently, the X3-45 has become a versatile platform, serving as a commuter coach for the New York City Transit Authority and as the base for the two VIP conversion coaches known as Ground Force One.
