In short: Princes Park, known today as Ikon Park, has evolved from a premier VFL/AFL venue into a specialized center for women's football and elite training. Once a massive stadium hosting grand finals and record-breaking crowds, its journey reflects the shifting priorities of Australian sports infrastructure over more than a century.

Established in 1897 as the home of the Carlton Football Club, Princes Park was once a central pillar of Australian rules football. At its peak, the venue held a nominal capacity of 35,000, though it famously accommodated 62,986 spectators during the 1945 VFL grand final. This record remains the highest attendance in the ground's history, followed closely by a 1945 semi-final that drew 54,846 people. For decades, the stadium served as a primary home for multiple clubs, including Hawthorn, Fitzroy, and the Western Bulldogs, before the AFL shifted its focus away from suburban grounds in the early 2000s.

The venue's identity underwent a radical shift following the final AFL premiership match held there in May 2005. Rather than fading into obsolescence, the site was repurposed through a series of significant investments. In 2007, a $15.7 million redevelopment plan was announced to provide Carlton with elite training facilities, including a heated pool and medical offices. By 2010, an $18 million facility was completed, cementing the ground's role as a permanent administrative and training base for the club, which holds a lease on the venue until 2035.

In recent years, the precinct has been revitalized to serve as a hub for women's football. Following the inaugural AFL Women's match in 2017, which drew a capacity crowd of 24,568, both state and federal governments committed funds to modernize the stadium. This included a $20 million contribution in 2018 and a subsequent $15 million in 2019. The resulting upgrades, completed in 2022, introduced a match-day pavilion, high-performance areas, and a women's coaching education hub. Today, Ikon Park continues to host major events, such as the 2023 AFL Women's Grand Final, while functioning as a sophisticated, multi-purpose sports facility.
