In short: The site of Western Sydney Stadium has seen everything from horse racing and motor sports to a grandstand burned to the ground. Today, this 30,000-capacity venue stands as a modern feat of engineering, replacing a demolished stadium with a high-tech, sustainable arena.

The ground's history stretches back to the British colony of Parramatta, founded in 1788. By 1847, Governor Charles FitzRoy had approved a racecourse on the site, which eventually evolved into Cumberland Oval. This space served many masters: it hosted motor sports as the Parramatta Speedway from 1930 to 1959, and became the home of the Parramatta District Rugby League Club in 1947.

The transition to a modern era was born of both necessity and chaos. Following a 1981 incident where supporters burned the grandstand after a premiership win, the site saw the construction of Parramatta Stadium, which opened in 1986 via Queen Elizabeth II. However, by 2015, the NSW Government decided on a complete knock-down rebuild to meet the growing demands of clubs like the Western Sydney Wanderers and the Parramatta Eels.

The new $300 million stadium, which opened in 2019, is a sophisticated piece of infrastructure. It features Australia's first major installation of modern safe standing, using an interchangeable system that adapts for rugby in winter and soccer in summer. Beyond sports, the project required significant local changes, including the demolition of the Parramatta War Memorial Pool and the Parramatta Memorial Swimming Club to accommodate the expanded footprint.

Now known as CommBank Stadium following a 2021 naming rights deal, the venue is a hub for international competition. It has hosted the Wallabies, the Matildas, and even the 2020 Sydney Sevens, proving that the site's long legacy of public gathering has simply entered a new, high-capacity chapter.
