In short: Pyeongtaek has evolved from a collection of rural districts into a major international economic and military center. By consolidating dozens of U.S. installations into a single, massive base at Camp Humphreys, the city now hosts the majority of American troops in South Korea, reshaping the region's geopolitical and urban landscape.

Located in Gyeonggi Province, Pyeongtaek was officially established as a union of two districts in 1940 and elevated to city status in 1986. Its history is deeply intertwined with the presence of foreign military forces, dating back to the Korean War, where it served as the site of the Battle of Pyongtaek. Today, the city is undergoing a deliberate transformation into an international economic hub, a strategy designed to align with the relocation of United States Forces Korea (USFK) to the area.

The centerpiece of this shift is the expansion of Camp Humphreys, located near Anjeong-ri. To facilitate this, the South Korean government utilized eminent domain to acquire land, marking the third time the local community has faced displacement since the Japanese occupation during World War II. This consolidation was part of a broader agreement to move U.S. forces away from the congestion of Seoul. By 2008, the U.S. military had successfully reduced its footprint from 41 installations down to 10, returning two-thirds of its previously occupied land to the South Korean government in the process.

Beyond its military significance, Pyeongtaek is a rapidly growing urban center that surpassed a population of 500,000 in April 2019. The city’s climate is unique within Gyeonggi Province, featuring the warmest January average temperature of -4.5°C and the lowest annual precipitation, largely due to minimal orographic rainfall. As the city continues to expand its administrative districts—having grown significantly through various mergers and promotions since the 1990s—it remains a critical intersection of South Korean domestic development and international security interests.
