How a strategic Iranian city evolved through five names and five millennia of history.
In short: Qaem Shahr, a vital hub in Northern Iran, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once known as the ancient settlement of Chamno, it evolved through the Qajar-era village of Aliabad and the Pahlavi-era city of Shahi, finally adopting its current name following the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
Located in the Mazandaran province at an elevation of 51 meters, Qaem Shahr sits between the Alborz foothills and the plains. Its history is deeply rooted in the Iron Age, with archaeological excavations uncovering 5,000-year-old pottery and stone tools. Before the Islamic era, the region was part of Tapurstan, named after the Tapur tribe, and later became known as Tabarestan. Historical records from the 7th to 9th centuries AH identify the area as Chamno, a fortified city that featured prominently in regional battles.
The city's modern development accelerated during the Pahlavi dynasty. Reza Shah, who was born in the region, ordered the renaming of the village of Aliabad to Shahi in 1931. During this period, the construction of the Trans-Iranian Railway and the establishment of various factories turned the city into a significant population center. By the time of the 2016 census, the population had reached approximately 204,953, establishing it as the most densely populated city in Mazandaran Province.
Strategically, Qaem Shahr serves as a critical gateway, linking Tehran to northern and northeastern Iran via the Firuzkuh and Haraz roads. Approximately five million travelers commute through the Firuzkuh route annually. Today, the city is a center for tourism and commerce, symbolized by the clock tower in Taleghani Square. Its residents, who belong to the Tabari ethnic group, maintain their cultural identity through the local Mazandarani dialect and adherence to Twelver Shia Islam.
