In short: Located hundreds of kilometers off Mexico's Pacific coast, the Revillagigedo Islands are a volcanic chain teeming with endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Once a planned site for a penal colony, this isolated sanctuary is now North America's largest marine protected area, shielding rare wildlife from human exploitation.

The Revillagigedo Archipelago consists of four volcanic islands—Socorro, Clarión, San Benedicto, and Roca Partida—situated in the Pacific Ocean. Discovered by Spanish explorers in the 16th century, the islands remained uninhabited until the modern era. In 1861, President Benito Juárez decreed they belonged to the state of Colima to establish a prison, a plan that never materialized. Today, the islands host only a small Mexican naval presence on Socorro and a tiny garrison on Clarión, with no permanent civilian population.

These islands are a biological treasure trove, recognized as a distinct terrestrial ecoregion. Because they never sat on a continental shelf, their flora and fauna evolved in isolation, leading to high rates of endemism. Fourteen of the sixteen resident landbird taxa are endemic, including the Socorro mockingbird and the Clarión wren. However, this delicate balance has been severely disrupted by the introduction of invasive species like sheep, cats, and pigs, which have pushed several native species toward extinction, such as the Socorro dove, now only surviving in captivity.

Conservation efforts have intensified in recent decades. In 2017, President Enrique Peña Nieto designated the surrounding waters as a massive marine protected area covering 150,000 square kilometers. This move banned commercial fishing, mining, and tourism development. Research indicates that this protection has been effective, with a study five years later showing an 82% decrease in fishing activity per vessel within the zone, proving that aggressive environmental policy can successfully safeguard remote biodiversity hotspots from global industrial pressures.
