The White Army: Saudi Arabia's elite force built on tribal loyalty and royal protection
In short: Distinct from the regular military, the Saudi Arabian National Guard functions as a parallel power structure. Forged from tribal elements loyal to the House of Saud, this force is tasked with safeguarding the royal family and securing vital infrastructure, operating under its own independent command and communication network.
The Saudi Arabian National Guard, historically known as the White Army due to its traditional attire, traces its origins to the Ikhwan, the tribal army that helped King Abdulaziz conquer the Arabian Peninsula. In 1954, the organization was formally modernized, and by 1963, it had shed its original moniker. Unlike the army, navy, or air force, the Guard reports directly to the king via the Ministry of National Guard, ensuring its chain of command remains entirely separate from the Ministry of Defense.
This institutional separation serves a strategic purpose: protecting the monarchy from internal threats, including potential coups. The force is composed of a standing army of 125,000 troops and a tribal militia of 28,000 levies. Personnel are recruited from tribes loyal to the royal family, and high-ranking princes traditionally hold the command. This structure effectively ties the tribes to the House of Saud, creating a system where leaders and followers share a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, making them less susceptible to outside ideologies.
In the 1970s, the Guard underwent a massive transformation with the help of the U.S. Vinnell Corporation, which utilized over 1,000 Vietnam War veterans to retrain the force into a mobile, hard-hitting counterinsurgency unit. This modernization replaced older equipment with advanced tactical vehicles, such as the LAV-25 series. Today, the Guard is organized into three regional sectors—central, eastern, and western—each managing mechanized brigades and irregular tribal battalions. These units are stationed near strategic assets, including oil installations and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, ensuring the regime's stability through a blend of modern military capability and traditional tribal allegiance.
