The Iranian province known as the Island of the Tribes
In short: Stretching from the Alborz mountains to the Kavir desert, Semnan province is a landscape of dramatic shifts. Beyond its geography, it serves as a living mosaic of ethnic identities and ancient linguistic remnants that trace back to the empires of old.
Semnan province, located in northern Iran, is a territory of significant historical depth. During the Median and A_chaemenid eras, it functioned as one of the largest provinces within those empires, sharing borders with the ancient region of Parthia. In later Islamic periods, the area was known as Gomess or Komesh. This long history is reflected in its geography, which transitions from the high southern slopes of the Alborz range down to the arid southern plains.
The province is often called the 'Island of the Tribes' due to its diverse demographic makeup. While the majority of its residents are Persian, the region hosts various ethnic groups, including those with Kurdish, Azeri, Lor, Arab, Baloch, and Gilak roots. This cultural variety is mirrored in the linguistic landscape. The Semnani languages, a group of Northwestern Iranian tongues, include several varieties such as Biyabunaki, Sangsari, Sorkhei, Aftari, and Lasgerdi. Some of these are considered dialects, while others, like Semnani proper, are linked to the extinct Median and Parthian languages.
Demographically, the province has seen steady growth over the last two decades. According to national census data, the population rose from approximately 570,835 in 2006 to over 702,000 by 2016. Administratively, the province was integrated into Iran's 'Region 1' in June 2014 to assist with coordinated development. Today, it remains a vital corridor, bordering several other provinces including Tehran, Mazandaran, and Isfahan.
