From Hollywood hits to a 60,000-book literacy crusade
In short: Sean Covel is known for producing the cult classic Napoleon Dynamite, but his most significant work might be in the classroom. By transforming children's literature into a vehicle for family engagement, he has moved from creating independent cinema to building massive educational infrastructure across the American West.
Born in Wyoming and raised in South Dakota, Covel’s career path was non-linear. After studying Broadcast Management at the University of Nebraska, Kearney, he worked as an executive headhunter in San Francisco before moving into film production. After obtaining an MFA at USC's School of Cinematic Arts, he joined their academic staff to instruct students regarding narrative creation and modern business trends.
Covel gained mainstream recognition for producing Napoleon Dynamite (2004), which earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination. However, his recent focus has shifted toward large-scale philanthropy and children's media. In 2019, he launched a series of 'look-and-find' books featuring Porter the Hoarder. This wasn't just a commercial venture; it became the centerpiece of a partnership with United Way of the Black Hills to distribute over 2,000 books to children in January 2019.
The scale of his impact grew exponentially through partnerships with the South Dakota Statewide Family Engagement Center (SDSFEC). These initiatives expanded the reach of his books to over 60,000 students across four states—South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Utah. His work now integrates into community health projects at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital and literacy campaigns that provide interactive books to first-grade students statewide.
Covel's approach combines creative production with social mechanics. Whether it is his '12 Days of Pizza' charity—which scaled from 144 meals to over 12,000 meals for food-insecure families in three years—or his '12 Days of Doing' bicycle refurbishment project in Spearfish, South Dakota, he uses narrative and community partnership to solve logistical problems like childhood hunger and educational engagement.
