In short: Founded in 1973, Smoothie King transformed from a small Louisiana health-focused venture into an international franchise giant. While once known for high-calorie offerings, the company has pivoted toward clean ingredients and modern digital strategies to capture a new generation of health-conscious consumers under its current leadership.

Steve and Cindy Kuhnau established the first Smoothie King in Kenner, Louisiana, in 1973. The brand gained early recognition for products like the Hulk, a 1,000-calorie smoothie originally created to assist a neighbor undergoing chemotherapy. Over the decades, the company expanded its footprint significantly. By 2018, it reached a milestone of 1,001 locations, and by 2020, the chain operated more than 1,100 stores. While primarily based in the United States, the company has maintained an international presence, including locations in South Korea, the Cayman Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago.

A major turning point occurred in 2012 when South Korean franchisee Wan Kim acquired the company from the Kuhnaus. Kim secured $58 million in capital from investment firms to fuel aggressive expansion, including plans for hundreds of new franchises and corporate-owned sites. Under his leadership, the company moved its headquarters from Louisiana to Coppell, Texas, by 2021. Kim also prioritized brand visibility, notably securing a 10-year naming rights deal for the New Orleans Arena, which became the Smoothie King Center in 2014.

In recent years, the company has undergone a strategic shift toward healthier menu options. In 2019, it launched the Clean Blends initiative to eliminate artificial flavors, preservatives, and added sugars. By 2023, the brand removed all syrups and introduced organic vegetables and smoothie bowls to appeal to younger demographics. This evolution is supported by a refreshed executive team, including the 2024 appointment of a new chief information officer and a 2025 leadership expansion for the chief financial officer, as the company continues to refine its digital and operational footprint.
