The Strait of Georgia is a vital, shifting artery of the North American coast
In short: Spanning 240 kilometres between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland, this critical waterway is more than just a navigation channel. It is a complex ecosystem, a hub for ferry transit, and a historic site of exploration that now forms a core component of the officially recognized Salish Sea.
The Strait of Georgia serves as a major maritime corridor on North America's west coast, facilitating essential travel and commerce. It acts as the southern gateway to the Inside Passage, a sheltered route stretching toward Alaska. The region is defined by its geography, with the Fraser River contributing roughly 80 percent of the freshwater inflow, which drives a counterclockwise circulation of water throughout the basin.
The strait's history is marked by shifting nomenclature and exploration. In 1791, Spanish explorers Jose Maria Narvaez and Juan Carrasco were the first Europeans to document the area. By 1792, Captain George Vancouver renamed it the Gulf of Georgia in honor of King George III. While the name remains, the strait is now recognized as a constituent part of the Salish Sea, a collective term adopted by Canadian and American geographic boards between 2009 and 2010 to encompass the strait, Puget Sound, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Beneath the surface, the strait is characterized by significant topographical variation. While its mean depth is 156 meters, the Ballenas Basin reaches depths of up to 420 meters. The region is also geologically active; a notable earthquake on June 23, 1946, caused the seabed at Deep Bay to sink by as much as 26 meters. Today, the strait remains a focal point for environmental and cultural activity, supporting diverse marine life and serving as a vital link for communities across British Columbia and Washington state.
