The rapid ascent and sudden setback of a Scottish football star
In short: In just one season, Youssef Chermiti transformed from a promising prospect into a record-breaking goalscorer. His meteoric rise at Rangers saw him shatter historical benchmarks before a devastating injury halted his momentum. This is the story of a career defined by explosive impact and the fragility of elite sport.
Born in the Azores in 2004, Chermiti’s journey to the top of the Scottish Premiership was marked by a steady climb through Portuguese academies like Sporting CP. After a period of recovery from injuries in 2021, he broke into the senior team in early 2023. His initial impact was immediate; he scored against local rivals Porto and made his European debut within weeks of his first professional appearances. His move to Rangers in September 2025 for a fee of £8 million (potentially rising to £10 million) made him the club's most expensive signing since 2000. The investment paid off with historic efficiency. By the end of the 2025–26 season, Chermiti had become a focal point of the attack, notably scoring a brace against Celtic to help close a 13-point gap in the league standings.
He also became the first Rangers player since Jermaine Defoe in 2019–20 to record two league hat-tricks in a single season. However, the trajectory of his career hit a wall in August 2026. Just hours after Rangers reportedly rejected a £22 million bid from Galatasaray, Chermiti suffered a serious ACL knee ligament injury against Hibernian. This incident highlights the high-stakes nature of modern football, where a player's market value and physical health can shift in a matter of hours. Despite the setback, his rapid rise—culminating in a Scottish Premiership Player of the Month award in March 2026—remains a testament to his technical quality.
