From Glasgow youth graduate to Serie A: the resilient rise of Nathan Patterson
In short: A rapid ascent through the Scottish ranks promised stardom, but a career defined by immense talent has been frequently interrupted by injury and controversy. Discover how this defender navigated the highs of European goals and the lows of pandemic-era sanctions to reach the Italian top flight.
Nathan Patterson's journey began in the Scottish Football Association's 'Performance Schools' programme, eventually rising through the Rangers youth ranks. His professional breakthrough was swift; after signing a new contract in December 2019, he made his debut against Stranraer in January 2020. By the 2020–21 season, he was a regular fixture in the Rangers side, even scoring a goal against Royal Antwerp just 16.6 seconds after entering the pitch in a Europa League match.
However, his momentum faced significant hurdles. In February 2021, Patterson was among five Rangers players issued a Fixed Penalty Notice by Police Scotland for attending a gathering that breached lockdown rules. This resulted in a six-game ban from the SFA. His move to the English Premier League with Everton in January 2022, for a fee believed to be around £11 million, was also hampered by physical setbacks. An ankle injury sustained in April 2022 required surgery and sidelined him for the rest of that campaign.
Despite the difficulty of adjusting to the Premier League's pace, Patterson continued to prove his international pedigree. He earned his first full Scotland cap in 2021 and scored his first international goal against Moldova in November of that year. Following a period of recovery from a serious injury sustained against Chelsea in April 2024, Patterson's career reached a new chapter. On 1 September 2026, he signed a three-year contract with the Italian Serie A side Torino, marking a significant transition to continental football.
