The first American football game was actually a soccer match fueled by a cannon
In short: On November 6, 1869, Rutgers and Princeton met for the first intercollegiate football game. It bore little resemblance to today's sport, featuring 50 players, soccer-style rules, and a desperate need for revenge following a bitter, long-standing dispute over a Revolutionary War cannon that Princeton had permanently encased in concrete.
The 1869 contest was the culmination of an intense rivalry between two schools separated by only 20 miles. Before the match, Princeton had humiliated Rutgers in a 40-2 baseball defeat and claimed victory in their ongoing struggle for a historic cannon by burying it in concrete. Seeking to settle the score, Rutgers captain William J. Leggett issued a challenge for a football series. The resulting game, played in New Brunswick, New Jersey, was governed by rules derived from the 1863 London Football Association, strictly prohibiting running with or throwing the ball.
Each team fielded 25 players, divided into fielders and 'bulldogs' who operated in enemy territory. The game consisted of 10 individual segments, with each goal ending a segment. While Princeton possessed a significant size advantage, Rutgers relied on speed and superior organization. Early in the match, Rutgers utilized a 'flying wedge' formation to charge at defenders, a tactic Princeton eventually countered through the efforts of Jacob Edwin Michael, known as 'Big Mike.'
Despite Princeton's physical dominance, their lack of cohesive kicking allowed Rutgers to secure a 6-4 victory. The match was witnessed by approximately 100 spectators and left a lasting legacy; Rutgers players wore scarlet turbans to distinguish themselves, a color that remains the school's signature. While some later accounts claimed the game ended in a hostile exodus, contemporary reports suggest a more amicable conclusion. The event marked the birth of a storied collegiate rivalry, though the game itself would not evolve into the modern gridiron format until years later, when schools like Harvard and Tufts began allowing players to carry the ball.
