How a well-intentioned study became one of history's most unethical experiments

Psychology Experiment - The Monster Study (One Of The Most Unethical Study Ever Conducted) · 7:36 · Video: Eniqma · Watch at the source

In short: In 1939, researchers in Iowa sought to understand speech patterns by intentionally inducing stuttering in healthy children. This pursuit of knowledge resulted in profound lifelong trauma for the participants and remains a haunting example of scientific overreach.

The experiment involved 22 orphans in Davenport, Iowa. The primary objective was to see if telling individuals who already stuttered that their speech was normal would facilitate recovery. To test this, researchers deliberately induced stuttering in children who were otherwise normal speakers.

Despite its initial goals, the study caused enduring psychological damage to the participants. It was never published in a peer-reviewed journal; instead, it earned the name "The Monster Study" from the victims themselves.
