To speed up in orbit, you must often slow down

The Only Video Needed to Understand Orbital Mechanics · 7:38 · Video: Animations Xplaned · Watch at the source

In short: Navigating through the cosmos defies our terrestrial intuition. On Earth, pushing a car forward makes it go faster. In the vacuum of space, however, the rules of mechanical energy create a counterintuitive reality where decelerating a spacecraft can be the key to reaching a higher, faster orbit.

To understand orbital navigation, one must first master the concept of mechanical energy. This energy is the sum of a spacecraft's kinetic energy—the energy of motion—and its potential energy, which is determined by its distance from the center of the Earth. In orbital mechanics, these two forces exist in a constant state of exchange. When a spacecraft moves closer to a planet, it gains speed but loses potential energy; as it moves further away, it slows down but gains potential energy.

Because of this relationship, changing an orbit requires a precise manipulation of these energies. For instance, if a pilot wants to move into a higher orbit, they must increase the spacecraft's potential energy. To do this, they can perform a 'burn' to slow the craft down. By reducing kinetic energy, the craft can coast further outward into a higher path. Conversely, to drop into a lower orbit, a spacecraft must increase its speed to gain the kinetic energy necessary to fall closer to the planet.

These principles are fundamental to space flight and are taught as core concepts for college-level physics students and NASA engineers. While many popular animations simplify these theories by using clockwise motions or specific altitudes to make the concepts easier to grasp, the underlying physics remains consistent. Mastering these 'different burns' is what allows for the precise maneuvering of satellites and the complex navigation required for deep-space missions.
