Why circular knitting requires you to read charts in reverse

How to Read Knitting Charts in Round | Circular Knitting · 4:40 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: If you are used to reading English, you might struggle with circular knitting. Unlike flat knitting, where you must flip your work and alternate directions, circular knitting requires you to read every single row from right to left, repeating the pattern multiple times to complete a single round.

When knitting in the round, the fundamental logic of chart reading shifts. In flat knitting, you work one row from left to right, then flip the fabric to work the next row from right to left. However, circular knitting eliminates the need to turn the work. Because you are working in a continuous loop, you never knit the 'back' of the piece. This means every row—or round—is read from right to left, following the direction of your stitches as they move from the tip of the needle.

This directional consistency applies regardless of the technique being used, whether you are working with lace, cables, or stranded color work like the 'Big Head Jim' Fair Isle hat. In a color work chart, you navigate the stitches in the same direction you knit. For example, to complete a single round, you must treat the chart as a repeating sequence. If a pattern is a multiple of 24 stitches, you would complete the sequence of 24 stitches, return to the start of the chart, and repeat it until you reach your stitch marker.

To manage these repetitive sequences and avoid losing your place, knitters use several practical tools. Some use reusable highlighter tape, sticking it over the completed row and moving it up as they progress. Others prefer magnetic charts with movable magnets, or simply a standard highlighter or pencil to mark their progress. The key is maintaining the right-to-left flow for every round before moving upward to the next level of the pattern.
