The undefeated champion whose massive heart fueled a historic racing dynasty
In short: In 2000, T. M. Opera O achieved a feat no other horse has ever replicated: a Grand Slam of major Japanese victories. This chestnut powerhouse dominated the track with an intensity that defied explanation, until science looked inside his chest to find the secret to his unstoppable stamina.
T. M. Opera O was a dominant force in Japanese Thoroughbred racing, most notably during an undefeated season in 2000. During that year, the chestnut colt won five domestic Grade I races and one international Grade I race. By securing victories in both the spring and autumn Tenno Sho, he achieved a singular 'Grand Slam' that no other horse has ever replicated. His legendary season included triumphs in the Takarazuka Kinen and the Arima Kinen. This remarkable run earned him the title of Japanese Horse of the Year. He also secured the JRA Award for Best Three-Year-Old Colt during his rise to fame.
The secret to his extraordinary performance may have been physiological. A 2003 study published in the Journal of Equine Science examined his heart, revealing a noticeably heavier left ventricular mass compared to other active racehorses. This enlarged heart was linked to an unusually low resting heart rate of just 25 beats per minute. Racing journalists have drawn parallels between this anatomical advantage and the legendary hearts of Secretariat and Eclipse.
Despite his immense success on the track, his life after racing was less predictable. After retiring in 2001 as the world's all-time leading money earner—with career winnings of 1,835,189,000 yen ($16,200,337)—he entered stud in 2002. While he produced 139 foals that won flat races, none achieved a graded victory. He died suddenly of a heart attack at Hakuba Bokujo, Hokkaido, on May 17, 2018.
