The phantom champion whose undefeated streak ended in a single injury
In short: In 2001, a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse appeared invincible. After winning the Satsuki Shō with ease, a sudden tendon injury halted his career, leaving the racing world to wonder what a completed Triple Crown might have looked and felt like.
Agnes Tachyon entered the racing scene in December 2000 with significant expectations, despite being only the third favorite in his debut at Hanshin Racecourse. As the full brother to the 2000 Tōkyō Yūshun winner Agnes Flight, his pedigree was elite. He was sired by the legendary Sunday Silence, a stallion who won the 1989 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and held the title of Japan's leading sire from 1995 to 2007.
His performance on the track was nothing short of dominant. He established a new 2,000-metre 2-year-old record during the Radio Tampa Hai Sansai Stakes, clocking 34.1 seconds for his closing three furlongs. He continued this momentum into the Yayoi Sho, winning by five lengths on a heavy track. By the time he reached the Satsuki Shō, he was the overwhelming favorite, carrying a win-only betting support rate of 59.4%.
His Triple Crown ambitions ended on 2 May due to the onset of superficial flexor tendonitis in his left front limb. This injury forced his withdrawal from the Japanese Derby, leading newspapers to label him a 'phantom' Triple Crown winner. While his racing career was brief, his impact on breeding was profound. He ended the twelve-year streak of his sire, Sunday Silence, by becoming Japan's leading sire in 2008. He eventually passed away from heart failure in 2009 at the age of eleven.
