The man who survived a radiation leak by becoming a hologram
In short: Arnold Rimmer is a second-class technician who technically died in a radiation leak three million years ago. Now, he exists as a digital ghost, trapped in a cycle of self-loathing, social failure, and a haunting memory of a cold bowl of soup.
In the sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, Arnold Rimmer is the de jure leader of a mining ship, despite being a lowly second-class technician. His existence is defined by a tragic accident: a radiation leak caused by his own improper repair of a drive plate killed the crew. Rimmer was resurrected as a computer-generated hologram, initially existing as 'soft light'—an intangible entity unable to interact with his surroundings. This digital purgatory was chosen by the ship's computer, Holly, because Rimmer and the sole other human survivor, Dave Lister, had shared 14 million words together, making Rimmer the most familiar presence to keep Lister sane.
Rimmer’s character is a study in psychological insecurity. He is haunted by a 'disastrous' social faux pas where he had gazpacho soup taken away to be reheated, only to be mocked by officers because the dish is served cold. This single incident undermined his self-esteem for the rest of his life. His backstory is equally bleak; he was denied an academy education by his father, who forced his sons into the Space Corps and nearly starved them by demanding they answer complex astronavigation questions before being allowed to eat.
The show explores various iterations of Rimmer's existence, including a 'hard light' upgrade in 1993 that allowed him to feel pain and touch objects, and a human resurrection via nanobots in 1999 that wiped his holographic memories. Despite his snobbish and pedantic exterior, Rimmer is a tragic figure of human achievement—or lack thereof—struggling with a history of bullying, academic failure, and a desperate need for the authority he was never granted in life.
