The man who survived three million years in deep space
In short: Imagine being marooned in the void for three million years, only to wake up as the last human being in existence. For Dave Lister, a low-ranking technician on the mining ship Red Dwarf, this cosmic isolation is punctuated by a singular, persistent dream: opening a hot dog diner on Fiji.
Dave Lister’s journey into deep space began not with heroism, but with a desire to avoid a career. A former supermarket trolley attendant who dropped out of art college after just 97 minutes, Lister joined the mining ship Red Dwarf as a third-class technician—the lowest rank on board. His life was defined by menial maintenance and the supervision of his superior, Arnold Rimmer. However, a catastrophic accident caused by Rimmer’s faulty repairs released lethal radiation, killing the entire crew and leaving Lister in stasis for three million years until levels returned to normal.
While marooned, Lister became a figure of mythic proportions. In the religion of 'the Cat's' people (Cloister), his dream of owning a farm on Fiji and opening a hot dog and doughnut diner is worshipped as Heaven itself. Despite his reputation as a lazy and unmotivated slob, Lister frequently displays moral courage. His backstory is one of abandonment; he was left in a cardboard box at six weeks old and grew up under the care of a grandmother who believed his father had been flushed down a toilet.
Lister's existence is further complicated by temporal anomalies and parallel universes. He has encountered future echoes of himself—including an elderly version aged 171—and even navigated a universe where he became pregnant with twins due to different physical laws. Throughout these cosmic shifts, his primary motivation remains constant: a longing for the 'promised land' of Fiji and a complicated, unrequited love for navigation officer Kristine Kochanski, with whom he shared only 173 words before her death.
