The 19-millimeter explorer who leads a tiny army of plants

In short: Captain Olimar is a salaried employee, a father, and a pilot whose vacation turned into a desperate survival mission. Standing less than an inch tall, he must command a species of anthropomorphic plants to repair his ship before his life support fails. His story explores the thin line between leadership and exploitation.

Created by Shigeru Miyamoto, Captain Olimar first appeared in the 2001 game Pikmin. He is a Hocotate Freight pilot who crash-lands on a distant planet after his ship, the S.S. Dolphin, hits a meteor. With only 30 days of life support remaining, he must direct the native Pikmin to recover 30 ship parts. While the game allows for a successful return home, a 'bad ending' exists where a failed takeoff leads to Olimar's death and a transformation into a Pikmin-like creature by the native 'Onion' lifeform.

Olimar’s characterization is noted for its unique groundedness; he is a standard worker with a wife and children. Critics have debated his morality, comparing him to Charles Marlow from 'Heart of Darkness' for using others to do his bidding. While some see him as a compassionate leader who gives the Pikmin purpose, others interpret him as a 'villainous alien intruder' who disrupts the planet's natural order to greedily harvest resources and kill native species like the Emperor Bulblax.

Despite his small stature, Olimar has become a significant figure in the Super Smash Bros. series, where he commands his Pikmin in combat. The character's identity pays homage to Nintendo's past, as his title rearranges the letters of 'Mario'. Miyamoto first imagined a title featuring tiny beings trekking behind a guide while transporting items, a concept that transformed into the intricate Pikmin world.
