In short: On July 15, 2012, three astronauts launched from Kazakhstan toward the International Space Station. Their journey marked the 37th anniversary of the Apollo-Soyuz mission, the historic 1975 flight that first linked American and Russian spacecraft and laid the foundation for the collaborative orbital outpost we maintain today.

The crew of Expedition 32 and 33, consisting of Yuri Malenchenko, Suni Williams, and Aki Hoshide, began their mission aboard the Russian Soyuz TMA-05M spacecraft. Departing from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the trio spent two days in transit before docking with the International Space Station on July 17, 2012. Upon arrival, they joined the existing crew of Gennady Padalka, Joe Acaba, and Sergei Revin, who had been stationed on the orbiting laboratory since mid-May of that year.

This mission was more than a routine crew rotation; it served as a platform for diverse scientific inquiry. During their four-month stay, the crew conducted research on human circadian rhythms and analyzed blood cells in microgravity. They also tested a novel microsatellite deployment system and engaged in extreme weather observations. The crew's work was supported by a series of complex logistical operations, including the arrival and departure of the HTV-3 Kounotori cargo vehicle and multiple undocking maneuvers of the 47P spacecraft.

Extravehicular activity, or spacewalking, remained a critical component of the mission's success. Throughout August and September 2012, the crew performed three significant spacewalks. These included a lengthy 8-hour and 17-minute excursion by Sunita Williams and Aki Hoshide on August 30, and a 6-hour and 28-minute walk by the same pair on September 5. Earlier, on August 20, Gennady Padalka and Yuri Malenchenko completed a spacewalk lasting 5 hours and 51 minutes. These efforts, alongside their scientific experiments, highlight the continuous, high-stakes nature of life and work aboard the station.
