The final assembly of a journey to the International Space Station

Expedition 27 Crew Prepares for Launch as their Soyuz Spacecraft and Rocket are Mated · 11:55 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Watch the precise technical coordination required to mate a Soyuz spacecraft with its booster at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. This process marks the beginning of the final countdown for three astronauts and cosmonauts heading into orbit.

On April 1, technicians at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan completed the mating of the Soyuz TMA-21 spacecraft and its booster. This critical step occurred just days before the scheduled launch on April 5, which was designed to transport a new crew to the International Space Station.

Commander Alexander Samokutyaev led the crew alongside Russian engineer Andrey Borisenko and NASA's Ron Garan. They were set to join an existing crew—including Dmitry Kondratyev, Cady Coleman, and Paolo Nespoli—who had been stationed in orbit since December.
