The first multi-planet system confirmed by the Kepler space telescope
In short: Witness the moment NASA's Kepler mission identified the first confirmed planetary system with multiple planets transiting a single star. This discovery marked a milestone in our search for diverse worlds beyond our solar system.
Based on seven months of observations, scientists identified Kepler 9b and 9c orbiting the sun-like star Kepler-9. This discovery was a significant milestone in the mission's ongoing effort to monitor over 156,000 stars for subtle brightness changes to find Earth-sized planets.
While Kepler provided the initial data, the mission has also enabled unique crowdsourcing achievements. In 2017, the Exoplanet Explorers project on Zooniverse allowed thousands of citizen scientists to identify the K2-138 system, which contains at least five planets and potentially a sixth.
