In short: On June 29, 2012, command of the International Space Station officially transitioned. This ceremony marked a historic milestone for cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, who assumed leadership of the orbital outpost for his third time, setting a new precedent for station operations.

The handover ceremony saw Expedition 31 Commander Oleg Kononenko pass control to Gennady Padalka. Kononenko, alongside NASA's Don Pettit and the European Space Agency's Andre Kuipers, prepared for their return to Earth following their arrival on December 23, 2011. Their mission concluded with a parachute-assisted landing in Kazakhstan on July 1, 2012, via the Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft.

Following the transition, Padalka continued his mission with flight engineers Joe Acaba and Sergei Revin. The crew awaited the arrival of additional Expedition 32/33 members, including Yuri Malenchenko, Suni Williams, and Aki Hoshide, who joined the station on July 17, 2012.
