The 24/7 pulse behind the world's most famous telescope
In short: Maintaining Hubble's legacy requires a constant human presence. This update covers the intense coordination required during the final shuttle servicing mission, where specialized teams work around the clock to ensure every observation is a success.
The Space Operations Control Center (STOCC) manages Hubble's systems and science observations every day of the year. During the final shuttle servicing mission, the STOCC coordinates with the mission control flight team in Houston to execute complex maneuvers.
The operation relies on two specific flight controller groups: the Orbit Team and the Planning Team. As of the sixth flight day, the mission has already completed the first of five planned spacewalks, successfully meeting two of the three top mission priorities.
