How the International Space Station manages its rotating crew of astronauts

Next ISS Crew Makes Its Arrival · 7:49 · Video: NASA · Watch at the source

In short: Space station life is a complex dance of arrivals and departures. As new crews dock and old ones prepare for Earth, the orbital outpost must manage a delicate handover of command, safety responsibilities, and the sheer logistics of living in weightlessness.

The logistics of the International Space Station (ISS) involve a highly choreographed sequence of mission handovers. When a new crew arrives, such as the SpaceX Crew-13 mission that arrived on October 1, the station's population can expand to 11 people. This particular arrival followed a record-setting 7-hour, 55-minute flight from Florida in a Dragon spacecraft. For the incoming members, the first few days are dedicated to acclimating to weightlessness and learning the complex station systems.

The transition period is critical for safety. Shortly after arrival, new crew members spend time unpacking the Dragon spacecraft, transferring essential safety gear, and establishing emergency roles. This period of integration concludes with a formal change-of-command ceremony. For example, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir is scheduled to hand over station command to Roscosmos cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov during a ceremony starting at 10:20 a.m. EDT on October 4. This ceremony also serves as a farewell for the departing Crew-12 members.

Departure is just as rigorous as arrival. The homebound Crew-12 members, including NASA's Jack Hathaway, ESA's Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos' Andrey Fedyaev, must pack cargo, configure spacecraft systems, and test their pressure suits. Their return to Earth is heavily dependent on external factors, such as weather conditions off the California coast. If weather permits, their departure could begin as early as Monday, October 5, following final weather briefings and NASA advisories.
