Why two astronauts are spending an entire year aboard the International Space Station
In short: NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko have embarked on a year-long mission to the International Space Station. This extended stay is a critical step in preparing for future deep-space exploration, providing essential data on how the human body and mind endure long-duration spaceflight.
Launched on March 27 alongside Expedition 43 crewmate Gennady Padalka, Kelly and Kornienko are conducting comprehensive research on the orbital laboratory. Their mission serves as a foundational component of NASA’s Journey to Mars, helping scientists understand the physical and psychological hurdles that astronauts will encounter during future missions to asteroids and the Red Planet.
Beyond this primary mission, the broader space agency agenda includes the Asteroid Redirect Mission concept, the Orion EFT-1 recognition event, the White House Science Fair, and recent honors bestowed upon the Kepler team.
